Artist's statement
My creative practice focuses on exploring family relationships and their profound impact. Building on my previous exploration of the father-daughter dynamic, I have delved deeply into the complexities of relationship formation, power structures within families, and the societal influences on intimate relationships. This gave me an insight into the unique and intricate nature of a mother-daughter relationship.
As mothers and daughters are often regarded as the "second sex" in society, their relationship is influenced by patriarchal cultures. In addition to the Oedipus complex, the mother-daughter relationship also represents the continuation of motherhood, and this conflicting nature prompted me to further explore this complex relationship structure.
I express my understanding of this relationship by documenting the embrace between mother and daughter. In this relationship, hugs symbolize love, comfort, understanding, acceptance, reconciliation, and more. I combine clothing with cyanotypes to transform fabric into photographic material, documenting the traces of these embraces and capturing their shape and warmth. This process freezes an intimate moment in time and space. At the same time, it expresses my desire for externalized maternal love.
Through the fusion of clothing and cyanotype, I capture moments of intimacy and connection that transcend words. I aim to unveil the hidden bonds beneath calm exteriors, establishing tangible emotional connections in my practice and inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences of love, support, and belonging within a familial context.
Furthermore, I will continue to explore the integration of cameraless photography with fabric, delving deeper into the visual expressions of intimate relationships through this artistic medium.
